The Intellectual Disability Health Capability Framework explains the skills health workers need to give safe, respectful and care. We call it "the Framework".

The Framework is for people who teach and train health professionals, such as universities and training organisations.

The Framework helps teachers show students:

  • the health needs of people with intellectual disability
  • how to communicate clearly
  • how to work well with people and their supporters.

What the framework includes

  • Clear steps for person-centred care
  • Simple actions for safe and inclusive practice
  • Examples of what good care looks like
  • Ways teams and services can improve access

Why it is useful

Many health care workers want to give better care but may not know where to start. This framework brings together national advice to support good teaching and better care.
