Healthy teeth and gums

Having healthy teeth and gums is good for your whole body. 

Health of your teeth and gums is called oral health.  

People with intellectual disability often have poor oral health. 

Poor oral health can cause pain and other problems.  

There are things you can do to help have good oral health. 

  • Learn how to look after your teeth and gums 
  • Go to the dentist regularly for check ups 
  • Go to the dentist if you have a problem with your teeth or gums 

Getting support to look after your teeth and gums helps you stay healthy. 

Having healthy teeth and gums is good for your whole body.

But oral health is often worse for people with intellectual disability. Oral health can be worse when people:

  • don't have regular dentist appointments
  • don't learn how to look after their teeth and gums
  • find it hard to follow a routine
  • don't get the right treatment soon enough
  • take medicines that give them a dry mouth.

Poor oral health can cause pain and many other problems. Getting support to look after your oral health an important way to stay healthy.
