People from different cultures and backgrounds

Many people of different backgrounds together.
Three people with different disabilities sit on the ground talking.

Australia is home to people from many different cultures, languages and backgrounds.

This is sometimes called culturally and linguistically diverse. We say CALD for short.

This can include people who:

  • were born in another country
  • speak a language other than English at home
  • have different cultures, beliefs or traditions
  • have family or community from around the world.

All people from different backgrounds and cultures deserve good health care.

Everyone should be able to:

  • get health care that respects their culture and beliefs
  • ask for an interpreter if they need one
  • get information in a language they understand
  • feel safe and welcome when using services
  • be treated fairly and kindly
  • have support people involved if they choose
  • find services that understand different cultures
